Allegorical Costumes sponsored by the Fiber Guild

Wed 7:00 PM at the Ball, Contact Mistress Magda

An allegory is a symbolic representation. In the Middle Ages, book illuminations, church paintings, frescoes and tapestries were full of symbolic representations of historical figures, saints, and characters from myth and legend. As costumers, we are discouraged from using these allegorical figures when constructing authentic clothing that would have been actually worn. But, wow, some of those garments are so beautiful! In this competition, we are encouraging you to be inspired by these allegorical figures! Come dressed as St. Cecilia or Fortune or Helen of Troy as depicted by creative medieval artists. Or, think up your own allegory. Creativity is the key.

Sweets for the Sweet III sponsored by Francis Bean

Sat. 6/21 1:00 PM in the A&S Comp. Tent, Contact mlw2@wustl.edu

It's the Sweets for the Sweet competition, take 3! That's right, this Lilies, all you brewers have an outlet for that disgustingly sweet, that syrupy concoction, that imitation cough syrup...Umm... Why is my Lady swatting me? Oh, right. Just like last year, there will be a brewing competition to win the hearts(and gratitude) of the lovely ladies who compare stout to motor oil, porter to swamp muck, and dry wine to fine Modena vinegar. Too long have these poor ladies sat in miserable sobriety! Brothers, this must be cured! All sweet alcohols are eligible -- cider, wine, mead, beer, even cordials and liqueurs. (As usual, cordials and liqueurs should be based on a neutral store-bought spirit.) Any beverage you have personally produced may be entered. Judging will be by a panel of sweet ladies of Calontir, with at least one experienced brewer for the more technical aspects. The judges will be looking for the following, in order:

  1. Taste. Aim for the sweet spot. Be forewarned: I do not think it is possible to over sweeten a beverage for this audience.
  2. Period ingredients.
  3. Period brewing techniques.
The prize: One hand-made table knife, courtesy Lord Francis Bean, bladesmith. The knife will come with documentation.
