Announcements under the tenure of Syr Tarl Wintersson:
[03-24-06]
Sir William von Kerneck will be stepping up as the new Earl Marshal tomorrow at
Coronation. Please note that the earlmarshal@calontir.sca.org
email will remain functional and will now forward to Sir William.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my deputies for their invaluable assistance to me during my
term as Earl Marshal and also to thank all the marshals of the kingdom for their service and dedication to the marshallate and to Calontir.
In service,
Syr Tarl Wintersson

the Field should verify their status and report any errors to the Earl Marshal.

The 4th Quarter Calontir Marshals Quarter Court Report is now online.
[02-03-06]
At a recent event, I witnessed two incidents involving helms.
In the first incident, during single combat, a single handed sword with a thrusting tip slid up under the front of the faceplate/bars of the helm and pressed against the fighter's cheek.
Upon inspection it was seen that there was a rather large gap under the front of the helm that allowed the sword to enter to enter the helm. The fighter was not hurt in this case and was advised to add a cammail or something similar to cover the gap.
The other incident, during a melee, involved a fighter trying to duck out of a shot, and while he was bending over, being hit in the head, causing his helm to come off.
Upon inspection it was seen that the chin strap was very cracked and worn and the helm padding was and so slick with sweat that there was not much keeping it in place. The fighter was not hurt and was advised to replace the chin strap and some of the padding.
I would like to ask all marshals to keep these incidents in mind while inspecting all helms in the future.
I feel it is important that we try to catch these type of problems before they make it on the field where someone might be injured.
I will follow up with the two fighters involved in the incidents to make sure they have made the needed changes to their helms.

The updated version of the Calontir Marshals Handbook has been released. There
are a few tweaks and clarifications as a results of feedback received over the
last few months. This is the final version of the Handbook for my term as Earl
Marshal and I will leave it up my successor to make any future changes if
needed. For simplicity, I have combined the two sections into one document, and
I also added a cover sheet.
The content of this handbook has been contributed to by many people in our
kingdom. The content has been passed on, altered, and rewritten to such an
extent that it is impossible to give credit to all the individuals involved. I
would however, like to thank everyone who has contributed to this handbook in
any form. Your efforts ensure that armored combat in Calontir will remain a fun
and safe activity for everyone!
[01-15-06]
With the Estrella War fast approaching, I would like to remind all fighters making the long journey to inspect their arms and armor to make sure it is safe and good repair. Fighters should also read and familiarize themselves with the war's rules and fighting conventions as posted on the Estrella War website:
http://www.estrellawar.com/files/ewxxii-treaty.pdf
At Kris Kinder, I appointed Graf Volkmar as the new Deputy for Cards. Please note his address in the back of the
Mews and elsewhere on this site. I would also like to take a moment to thank Herr Albrecht von Salzburg for his many years of service to the kingdom as the former Cards Deputy. Albrecht will continue his service with the marshallate as a Deputy at Large.
[01-03-06]
The next Quarter Court will take place at War Maneuvers on January 14th,
sometime after the day's fighting.
All are welcome to attend.
[12-15-05]
There have been some recent changes to the staffing of the KEM Office.
I would like to thank H.L. Rebecca Beaumont for her service as Kingdom Water Bearer and also to welcome her successor, Miriam von Schwarzwald.
I would like to thank His Highness Semjaka for his service as a deputy earl marshal prior to ascending the Falcon Throne as Heir. As his replacement, I would like to welcome Jean Michel Guicard as a new deputy at large. I would also like to thank H.L. Halvgrimr for his service as a deputy earl marshal as well.
As reminder, my term as Earl Marshal will be complete as of March. If you are interested in serving our kingdom in this capacity, please send a letter of interest to myself, the Kingdom Seneschal and also Their Majesties. Their Majesties have asked that all letters of interest be submitted by 12th Night (Jan 7th).
[11-17-05]
The latest Calontir Marshals Quarter Court Report is now online.
The QC was held at the recent Crown Tournament event on November 5th. Usually, I make a public
announcement in advance regarding when and where the next QC will be held but due to scheduling issues, the QC was scheduled at the last minute without time for me to issue an announcement. My
apologies to those that were unable to attend because of this.
[11-11-05]
At the Kris Kinder event on December 3rd, I intend to hold an open meeting to
discuss issues of interest to the marshallate.
This is a great chance to ask questions and also get to know the Earl Marshal
and other marshals in Calontir.
I strongly encourage all marshals to attend. Anyone is welcome however.
The meeting time and room will be announced later (possibly on that day).
Also, The current marshal's handbook has been out and in use for about 6
months now.
This seems like a fair amount of time to have tested the changes and become
familiar with the new rules.
At this time I would like to collect feedback and requests for changes or
revisions. Note: I do not intend to "re-write" the handbook again, but
only to make minor changes or clarifications, fix spelling errors, etc.
I also intend to add a version number or revision date to the handbook so that
it will be easy to see if you have the most up to date version.
For convenience, I would ask that the online discussions of any changes take
place only on the marshallate mailing list ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/calon-marshal/
) so that we can keep up a coherent conversation and not break up into multiple
threads on multiple mailing lists. You may also contact me directly via email or
in person as well. Any significant changes/suggestions I receive will most
likely be discussed on the marshallate list as well.
The marshallate meeting at Kris Kinder will be the last date I plan to accept feedback, then I will work on any changes.

The updated Marshallate roster is now online. All Group Marshals and Marshals of
the Field should verify their status and report any errors to the Earl Marshal.
A number of Marshals of the Field have been dropped from the roster due to lack
of reporting.
As a reminder, any marshal who plans to be a Marshal-In-Charge at an event or
who wishes to assist with running Authorizations MUST be a warranted
marshal.
Members of the Chivalry must also be warranted to be the MIC of an event.
However, they may assist with running authorizations without being warranted.

The latest Calontir Marshals Quarter Court Report is now online.
[06-29-05]
Several new articles have been added to the Articles page. As always, if you
have anything you would like to contribute, pleas let me know.
[06-06-05]
The new Calontir Marshals Handbook has been officially released. All Calontir
fighters and marshals should read and become familiar with the new rules. These
rules are to be used in the upcoming War of the Lilies. All marshals for the war
are strongly encouraged to have a printed copy of the new handbook and also the
Society Marshals handbook on hand to help with enforcing the new rules. Any
questions regarding the new rules should be forwarded to the Earl Marshal.
[05-27-05]
Due to an incident that was recently reported, I would like to ask that all
marshals take extra care when inspecting siloflex swords. In particular, be sure
to test that the siloflex covering of the sword cannot slide off the end of the
rattan core.
[05-19-05]
The newest "work-in-progress" version of the new marshals handbook is now
available on the "Documents" page. This is the first section of the
handbook that covers armor and weapons standards, fighting conventions, etc.
This version is not yet official. Please send me your feedback.
If you have articles or good tips on marshalling you would like to see included in the marshals
section of the handbook please contact me.
The latest Calontir Marshals Quarter Court Report is now online.
[05-17-05]
The updated Marshallate roster is now online. All Group Marshals and Marshals of
the Field should verify their status and report any errors to the Earl Marshal.
Marshals who have not reported for two consecutive quarter will lose their
warrants.
[05-11-05]
The Society Marshal has officially passed the Mandrake Armory Two Handed
thrusting tips. These may now be used in Calontir without contacting the Earl
Marshal. I would like to remind all fighters and marshals that these tips must
still pass inspection as normal. No equipment (regardless of the materials used
in construction) "automatically" passes without inspection.
Also, a couple of new articles have been added to the Articles page.
[04-20-05]
The Agreement to Serve form can now be submitted online!
No more copy and paste, or hardcopies required.
[04-04-05]
After a brief hiatus due to server failure, this website has relocated to a new
home on the official http://www.calontir.sca.org
website.
A big "Thank You" to Master Conrad for all his help with this!

The updated marshallate roster is now online. All Group Marshals and Marshals of
the Field should verify their status and report any errors to the Earl Marshal.
[02-16-05]
Greetings Marshals, I have sent notices to the individual group Knights Marshals
that have not yet reported for 4th quarter. If they have not reported for more
than one quarter, I typically follow up with the group's Seneschal as well.
For Marshals of the Field, I will no longer try to track you down.
If a MOF does not report for two consecutive quarters, I will drop their
warrant.
Former Earl Marshals warranted as "Deputies at Large" are NOT required
to report each quarter.
Reserve Marshals (Order of Chivalry) are NOT required to report.
I update the online warrant roster after each reporting period ends. I
usually allow a generous time period before doing so to catch any
"stragglers". (I am currently working on an update...)
This roster is the official list of a marshals status. Please review it after
each reporting period to make sure your information is up to date. There will
always be a date showing the last time it was updated.
If you intend to be a MIC or assist with authorizations, it is your
responsibility to keep up on reporting to me and verify that you are on the
warranted marshals list.
[01-26-05]
I would like to remind all marshals that if they have been a Marshal-In-Charge of an event, that they need to be sure to submit an Event Report to the Earl Marshal within two weeks of the event. There is an updated form available on
this website.
I would also like thank all those who have been participating in the online discussion on the marshallate mailing list. I strongly feel that this type of open discussion is a positive thing for our kingdom.
I am currently working on updating our Resolution of Grievances procedures as part of the new marshals handbook. While this is not yet complete, I would like to take the first step in improving this process. I am now mandating that at each event where SCA armored combat occurs (except fighter practices) that the Marshal-In-Charge holds a Marshals Court after the day of fighting is done. The idea behind this is to take away the stigma sometimes associated with Marshals Courts as being held only for "punishment". At the Marshals Court, all assisting marshals should attend as well as any fighters with issues that were unable to be resolved earlier in the day. A general discussion of the days events should be held and any questions or comments can be discussed. This is a good chance to make sure that all of the authorization forms, etc., are properly completed and signed by the assisting marshals. At this point if there are any unresolved issues or incidents requiring marshallate action or sanctions, these should be investigated and dealt with appropriately as described in the "Resolution of Grievances: Marshal's Court" section of the official marshal's handbook. All of the above should be noted in your event report and sent to the Earl Marshal. Any appeals to a decision by a Marshals Court may be made directly to the Crown or the Quarter Court.
I feel this process will help encourage better communication between all fighters and marshals as well as helping the Marshal-In-Charge with their administrative tasks.
As always, I welcome your feedback on this or any other marshallate issues.
[12-29-04]
The FAQ has been updated with information about Transfer Authorizations. The
minutes from the two most recent Quarter Courts are now online.
[11-11-04]
The Marshallate roster has been updated.
I have also added a list of the previous Earl Marshals of Calontir and granted
them Deputy status. I ask that the former Earl Marshals make sure that they are
up to date on recent rules and fighting conventions in the kingdom before acting
in that capacity, especially if they have not been very active in recent years.
[11-10-04]
It seems that lately I have been getting a lot of reports concerning problems with gorgets. This is an important piece of armor since an injury to the area that it protects, could be quite serious.
It is up to each fighter, regardless of their rank, to make sure their equipment meets the minimum established safety standards. It is the
Marshallate's job to enforce these standards for all fighters.
The last thing a marshal wants to do is fail someone's equipment and tell them they can't play. That is no fun for anyone.
I urge all the fighters in our kingdom to take the time to inspect their weapons and armor and make sure that they are in good working order and that they do meet the required standards. Something that was fine when you built it may no longer be adequate. Wear and tear happens and things do break. The Winter months are an excellent time to re-evaluate things, and build your new gear for the Spring.
[10-27-04]
The "work-in-progress" version of the new marshals handbook is now
available on the "Documents" page. This is the first section of the
handbook that covers armor and weapons standards, fighting conventions, etc.
This version is not yet official. Please send me your feedback.
If you have articles or good tips on marshalling you would like to see included in the marshals
section of the handbook please contact me.
There is also a new version of the Event Report form available on the "Documents" page.
[10-08-04]
The experimental weapons page has been updated with some notes regarding
inspecting experimental materials. Please contact the Earl Marshal with any
questions.
[9-23-04]
The next Calontir Marshals Quarter Court will be on Saturday, Oct 9th at the
Tournament of St. Dennis in Standing Stones. I am guessing sometime after the
tournament. All are welcome to attend.
Also, all QC reports will now be posted on this website. They can be found on the "Documents" page.
[9-01-04]
Experimental Thrusting Tips:
We are currently allowing the use of the Mandrake Armory (Roderick) two handed
thrusting tips (black, rubber). If you plan on using these, you need to contact
me so that I may add you to the list of experimental users. I will want your
feedback on their use. Please see the list of approved users on the Experiments
page.
[8-30-04]
The FAQ section has been updated somewhat. Specifically, the definition of
Reserve Marshals (Members of the Order of Chivalry) has been clarified.
[7-22-04]
The Marshals Agreement to Serve form and the Authorization form have both been
modified again somewhat. If you have already sent in your Agreement to serve
form, there is no need to resend it. I felt a change/clarification in
some of the wording was needed.
[6-22-04]
All Group Marshals and Marshals of the Field will now be required to complete a
Group Marshal or Marshal of the Field Agreement to Serve Form (available on this
site) in order to remain in good standing with the Earl Marshal. The information
on this form and that from Quarterly Reports will be used to issue/renew all
Marshal's Warrants.
Group Marshals and Marshals of the Field failing to complete this form or that
have not sent in Quarterly Reports for two consecutive quarters will lose their
Warranted status.
There are also revised versions of the Status Report and Authorization Forms available. Please discard any older version you may have and start using the new forms as soon as possible. Paper copies of all Marshallate forms may be obtained directly from the Earl Marshal as needed.
[6-21-04]
The structure of the Office of the Kingdom Earl Marshal has changed somewhat
recently. The Regional Deputy system is no longer in use. These Deputies to the
Earl Marshal will now be known as "Deputies at Large" and will not be tied to a
specific geographical area. The idea here is to have these deputies be available
to people in their area as needed. Anyone needing help or having questions can
just contact the Deputy that lives closest to them. All Quarterly Reports from
Group Marshals and Marshals of the Field should go directly to the Earl Marshal
(they may be copied to any Deputy as needed). Quarterly Status Reports will still need to
go to the Deputy in charge of Cards. These Deputies are specially designated by
the Earl Marshal to do Minor Authorizations and also to Authorize Marshals in
Training. When arriving at events, these Deputies should check in with the
Marshal-In-Charge of the event to offer the assistance as needed.
